trip down memory lane..

The Globe and Mail posted an article online about something from my past that prompted some nostalgia for me. It was about the slow death of small town curling rinks.

I was taken back to my junior high days when our classes were taken to the rink for physical education classes. We would trek the few blocks' distance to the building that housed both the curling and skating rink and spend an hour or sometimes more learning the ins and outs of the game.

Now, I was never all that good at curling so lest you think I enjoyed that time because I was good at the game, rest assured that wasn't the case. I just loved the sport for the fellowship and exercise it had to offer. We had local bonspiels each year and the year I was in grade 8, I was fortunate enough to be lead for a winning rink, placing third place and getting a trophy. I'm sure I still have that trophy somewhere in my 'memory box' from my childhood. I still remember how it felt to wear our school jackets and chase those rocks from end to end. It was exhilarating!

I wish my kids could have had that experience like so many of my childhood friends' children. Many of them grew up 'back home' but I ended up in the city and I married a city boy. We spent a few years in smaller towns where we caught a glimpse of that life again but it didn't last as we were 'forced' into a city setting when Mr.B. was injured at work and needed much in the way of healthcare for a time. I'll tell you, my kids have no idea the fun that they missed being city folk.
